CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Cool, early morning air swept into Taylorâs lungs as she breathed in, her feet pounding the pavement of a park just a block away from her home with Ben. A deep wash of purple swept over the sky, and the last of the stars faded as the sun began its ascent over the horizon. Taylor ran with her headphones blasting on full, wearing a loose black hoodie and leggings. It felt good to sweat. To put all of her energyâmental and physicalâinto keeping her legs moving, her breathing calm, her blood pumping.
Things at home were still tense with Ben. She hadnât told him about her visit to the tarot reader yesterdayâher pride wouldnât allow it. Taylor could admit to herself it was her ego that stood in the way of her honesty sometimes; she didnât want to look like a fool after swearing all tarot was nonsense. Especially after what Belasco said lastâthat another death was coming. Taylor had tossed and turned all night in a fit of paranoia. And when paranoid thoughts took over, the rational mind left, and all that remained were the thoughts: But what if it is real?
This whole thing brought back memories Taylor had worked so hard to forget. Memories of her mid-twenties, before she met Ben. Back when she was with Jeremy.
Jeremy. His name hadnât crossed her mind in ages. Sheâd rather it didnât. But in remembering his nameâhis faceâcame a flood of other memories, all of which Taylor wished would wash away forever.
Taylor had started dating Jeremy Eggert, an aspiring firefighter, right when she was a junior agent. He was the type of guy who could light up any party, the type who would have been popular in high school. More like someone Angie would have dated, not someone who would have chosen Taylor.
But he did choose her. And he was persistent about it, too. Taylor had no idea when she agreed to their first date what theyâd go through as a coupleâand what sheâd go through as a woman.
The truth was, Taylor had seen one tarot reader before Belasco. Back when she was with Jeremy, a week before the warehouse incident.
Sheâd been pregnant at the time. It was an accident. But one she had welcomed. Back then, sheâd been more optimistic, certain that things would just âwork outâ the way they were supposed to, so she wasnât so concerned about dying on the job or leaving behind a child. She just wanted a baby with a man she thought she loved. It seemed like the next logical step to take in her life.
Jeremyâs sister, Amy, had wanted Taylor to get a reading done to find out more about their child. Taylor thought it was all a bunch of bullshit, but like with Ben only days ago, sheâd begrudgingly agreed, maybe just to shut Amy up.
It had been a cold winter night. Amy had hurried Taylor through the snow, to a small shop in downtown Portland. Unlike Belascoâs, this shop was less extravagant, and the reader barely seemed to believe her own bullshit.
